The official website of the Maryland Board of Physicians (MBP) is https://www.mbp.state.md.us. The Maryland Board of Physicians website receives the MBP information directly from the MBP database. The following MBP data fields are protected from alteration by unauthorized individuals by using encryption technology: practitioner’s name, license number, graduation date, license status, date license issued, license expiration, and Maryland disciplinary actions. Consistent with The Joint Commission (formerly JCAHO) and NCQA standards for primary source verification, the MBP website at https://www.mbp.state.md.us is considered a primary source for these MBP data - it is the same information the MBP provides through other means, such as phone, fax, or mail, and is true and complete to the best of our knowledge. Each practitioner record displayed on the MBP website contains the date when the record was extracted under "This data was extracted on . . ."

Practitioners supply and can make changes to other information on the profile (e.g., self-designated practice area, postgraduate education). Other information is reported to the Board by other entities. Information from the practitioner and from other sources has not been verified by the Maryland Board of Physicians.

Health Occupations Article, §14-411.1(c)(2) requires that some information about malpractice settlements and awards be included on each profile, so that consumers can be more informed about their health care providers. In considering malpractice data, consumers should understand three things. First, there may be a large time gap between an incident and the final court settlement relating to the incident. Second, some medical specialties (such as surgery and obstetrics) are "high risk" and result in more malpractice claims and judgments than others. Finally, the size of an award relates to the economic loss to a patient resulting from the incident (for instance, potential earnings lost). Thus, a physician's malpractice history should be only one of many considerations when selecting a physician for you or your family. The Board does not have details concerning malpractice payments; this information is reported by the practitioner. This section indicates whether there are any other public actions against the licensee. Out-of-state medical board actions are posted on the website indefinitely. Actions by administrative, regulatory, or other related entities are posted for a period of seven years, from the date of the action.

A disciplinary action that prohibits a licensee from practicing their profession or a specific facet of their profession in the State of Maryland at all times while the license is active.

DISCLAIMER: The public should be aware that a charge constitutes only the Board’s preliminary vote that there is probable cause that a violation of the Medical Practice Act has occurred. The charge has not yet been tested in the hearing process. In the hearing process, the licensee will have a chance to introduce his or her own evidence and to argue that a violation did not occur. Only after the hearing process is complete will there be a final decision as to whether a violation has occurred.

Emeritus License Status is granted to a qualified physician who is licensed in Maryland and has retired from the active practice of medicine and does not render medical services or prescribe any medications. The status is good for 6 renewal cycles. If the status is not renewed before the expiration date, the license status becomes "Expired".

Inactive License Status is granted to a qualified physician who is licensed in Maryland and has retired from the active practice of medicine and does not render medical services or prescribe any medications. The status is good for 6 renewal cycles. If the status is not renewed before the expiration date, the license status becomes "Expired".

Conceded Eminence	A physician who has demonstrated significant teaching, research, and achievement in the field of medicine and has been recommended to the Board by the dean of a school of medicine or the director of the National Institutes of Health. A physician who is licensed by conceded eminence may only practice at the institutions approved by the Board.
Volunteer	Practice limited solely to providing medical services to patients in Maryland without compensation.
Limited License for Postgraduate Teaching (LLPGT)	A postgraduate teaching license means the physician shall: Only practice within the teaching institutions and programs specified within the application; Practice medicine only in conjunction with the applicant's teaching responsibilities; and Not practice medicine outside the applicant's teaching responsibilities.
License by Reciprocity	The Maryland Board of Physicians (the Board) will issue a license by reciprocity to physicians who have an active, unrestricted license in Virginia and are an American Medical Graduate, or have an active, unrestricted license in the District of Columbia. The applicant must meet other minimum qualifications for licensure such as good moral character.
License by Endorsement	The Maryland Board of Physicians (the Board) will issue a license by Endorsement to physicians who have at least one current, unrestricted license in good standing for the 4 years immediately preceding the application, current Board Certification, and no current or past disciplinary actions. The applicant must meet other minimum qualifications for licensure such as good moral character.
Physician Assistant License by Reciprocity	The Maryland Board of Physicians (the Board) will issue a license by reciprocity to physician assistants who have an active, unrestricted license in Virginia or the District of Columbia. The applicant must meet other minimum qualifications for licensure such as good moral character.
Physician Assistant License by Endorsement	The Maryland Board of Physicians (the Board) will issue a license by Endorsement to physician assistants who have at least one current, unrestricted license in good standing for the 5 years immediately preceding the application, and no current or past disciplinary actions. The applicant must meet other minimum qualifications for licensure such as good moral character.
Compact	A physician who lives in a state participating in the Interstate Medical Licensure Compact (IMLC) can apply for a license in other participating IMLC states.
Compact Conversion	A physician who obtained an initial Maryland license through the Interstate Medical Licensure Compact (IMLC) but who converted to have a Maryland license outside of the IMLC.
Naturopathic Doctor License by Reciprocity	The Maryland Board of Physicians (the Board) will issue a license by reciprocity to qualified Naturopathic Doctors. The applicant must meet other minimum qualifications for licensure such as good moral character.
Traditional	A practitioner who obtained an initial Maryland license/registration through either a paper application or the online application.

Acupuncture Registration	Physician has completed at least 200 hours of instruction in a medical acupuncture program and is registered with the Board to perform acupuncture in Maryland (COMAR 10.32.15.01).

Nuclear Medicine Technologists (NMT) Approved to Operate Standalone/Hybrid CT Devices for Diagnostic CT	May operate a standalone CT or hybrid nuclear medicine/CT device for a diagnostic CT with or without intravenous contrast with the following qualifications: Successfully passed the ARRT or NMTCB specialty exam for CT; and Administers contrast media after consultation with, and under the supervision of, a physician who is immediately and physically available. In addition, the Board requires that all NMTs who intend to perform diagnostic CT complete and submit the Notification of Intent of a Nuclear Medicine Technologist (NMT) to Perform Diagnostic CT  form to the Board.

A Primary Supervising Physician (PSP) may delegate core duties to a Physician Assistant (PA) upon acknowledgement of an executed delegation agreement and payment to the Maryland Board of Physicians (the Board). The Board then completes a full review and denotes the delegation agreement as "Approved".

Summary of Known Disciplinary Actions
The summaries for disciplinary actions within Maryland and outside of Maryland are only required to be displayed on the profile for 10 years from the date of the action, Health Occ. 14-411.1. However, public orders are not time-limited.
