Eligibility: To apply for inactive status, a licensee must have an unrestricted active license. Licensees with an
expired license or licenses not in good standing are not eligible to apply for inactive status.
- If the Board approves the application, the inactive status becomes effective immediately.
- A licensee with an inactive license may not practice, attempt to practice, or offer to practice medicine, prescribe
medication, delegate medical acts, or conduct peer review of physicians in Maryland.
- New applicants must currently have Active status to apply for Inactive status, or are renewing their Inactive status as required every two (2) years.
- Renewal Requirement: A licensee with a valid, inactive status license who intends to maintain inactive status must pay the $218.00 fee
before their inactive expiration date expires every two years. The license status will convert to "Expired" if the licensee fails to renew the inactive status before the inactive expiration date.
Notes:
- Disciplinary Proceeding: An inactive license does not deprive the Board of its authority to institute or continue a
disciplinary proceeding against a licensee.
- Reinstatement of Maryland Medical Licensure: To reinstate to Active status, a licensee must apply for
Online Reinstatement and meet all the requirements for reinstatement, including continuing
medical education, and submission of fingerprints for a criminal history records check. The licensee may be required
to undergo additional testing and examination, such as the SPEX exam, as determined by the Board.
- Change of Name/Address: Each licensee (including those with an inactive license) must notify the Board in writing
of any name or address within 60 days of the change. Failure to do so may subject you to an administrative penalty of
$100.00. (Health Occupations Article, §14-316(f), Annotated Code of Maryland).
- Practicing Medicine Without a License: A person may not practice medicine in Maryland without an active medical
license pursuant to Health Occupations Article §§14-601 and 14-606, Annotated Code of Maryland). Any person who
violates this provision is subject to a civil fine not to exceed $50,000.
- Certification: Carefully read each item of the certification on the application.
