Radiologist Assistants

  1. An individual must have a current Maryland license as a radiographer before the individual may apply for a license to practice radiology assistance.
  2. A radiologist assistant may only practice under the supervision of a radiologist licensed in Maryland.
  3. A licensed radiologist may not employ or supervise an individual practicing radiology assistance without a license.
  4. An individual may not practice, attempt to practice, or offer to practice radiology assistance in Maryland unless the individual is licensed to practice radiology assistance.
  5. Unless authorized to practice, a person may not represent to the public by title, description of services, methods, or procedures that the person is authorized to practice.
  6. Any person who practices without a license is subject to a civil fine of not more than $5,000.

The applicant shall complete an application pdf supplied by the Board and:

  1. Be of good moral character
  2. Be at least 18 years old
  3. Completed a radiology assistance education program that is recognized by ARRT, and successfully completed coursework that leads to a baccalaureate degree or post-baccalaureate certificate
  4. Has passed the examination administered by ARRT
  5. Has been certified and maintains current registration with ARRT
  6. A current license as a radiographer
  7. Completion of a radiologist or radiation oncologist-directed clinical preceptorship
  8. Completion of a criminal history records check
  9. Any other requirements established by the Board

The application process, on average, may take 3 ‐ 6 weeks. However, the process may take longer depending on the individual applicant's circumstance or if the individual does not provide the required documentation in a timely manner.
  1. Completion of a reinstatement application pdf approved by the Board.
  2. Payment of a reinstatement fee.
  3. Satisfactory evidence of compliance with the continuing education requirements.
  4. Completion of a criminal history records check.
  5. Verification from the Maryland Office of the Comptroller that the applicant has paid all undisputed taxes and unemployment insurance contributions payable to the Comptroller or the Secretary of Labor, Licensing, and Regulation or that the applicant has provided for payment in a manner satisfactory to the unit responsible for collection. (Maryland Health Occupations Code Annotated, § 1-213).
  1. 50 hours of approved continuing education earned during the 2-year period preceding the expiration of the license; or
  2. Verification of current ARRT registration.

Continuing education hours that are used to satisfy the requirement for renewal of a license as a radiographer may also be used to satisfy the requirement for a radiologist assistant license.

Complete and submit the Advanced Procedures Request Application. The application must be jointly submitted by the radiologist assistant and the radiologist.
