Approval of Corporate Names Information

Pursuant to House Bill 1153 (2021 Ch. 794), Names of Entities With Physician Membership — Approval Requirement — Exemption, the Board of Physicians (“the Board”) no longer approves corporate names. Effective October 1, 2021, the Board is not required to approve the name of a professional entity whose members are licensed physicians, as defined under §14-101 of the Health Occupations Article.

Reciprocity Information

Please note, that due to the complexity of the reciprocal licensing requirements, and the time required for the applicant and the Maryland Board of Physicians (the Board) in researching past licensure requirements, the Board encourages applicants to complete the pdf  Initial Medical Licensure application or apply for a medical license through the Interstate Medical Licensure Compact. To date, the Board has not issued any licenses by reciprocity due to applicants not meeting the licensing requirements.

**PLEASE NOTE** Applicants must contact the jurisdiction of his or her licensure to check on the requirements before contacting the Maryland Board of Physicians regarding eligibility for licensure by reciprocity.

Set forth below are the eligibility requirements for initial medical licensure by reciprocity:
  1. Applicant must have an active, unrestricted license to practice medicine in another jurisdiction that, at the time of your licensing, had licensure requirements substantially equivalent to the current licensure requirements of the Maryland Board of Physicians. Please refer to COMAR 10.32.01.03.
  2. That same state jurisdiction currently offers a similar reciprocal licensure process to physicians licensed by the Maryland Board.
If after completing the above steps, you believe you may qualify for licensure by reciprocity, please contact the Board by email regarding your eligibility: mbpmail@rcn.com.

Paper Initial Medical Licensure Application Information

The Maryland Board of Physicians (the Board) encourages physician to take advantage of completing their application for a medical license using one of three online options:

  1. The Board offers an online option that partners with the Federation of State Medical Boards. If you have a Uniform Application (UA), your UA data is seamlessly imported, saving you time from having to re-enter your demographic information.
  2. If you don't have a UA, you may still opt to apply online using the Create New Maryland Application link. This online option allows you to pay by credit card and eliminates data keying errors by electronically submitting your application.
  3. The Interstate Medical Licensure Compact (IMLC) - The IMLC is a pathway to expedite licensing for physicians seeking to practice medicine in multiple IMLC states. The IMLC creates a streamlined process for obtaining multiple state licenses. Applicants for licensure through the IMLC must meet the rigorous qualifications established under the IMLC. For more information about the IMLC, please visit the IMLC website.

For physicians who prefer to complete the paper version of the initial medical license application, please email your request to: mbpmail@rcn.com. Please keep in mind that the paper process will take longer. It could take up to 120 days for physicians who meet the qualifications for licensure to receive a license from the Board.
