Physician Inactive Status FAQs

In order to be eligible to place your license on inactive status, a licensee must have:

1. An active, unrestricted license to practice medicine in Maryland that is in good standing or is within 60 days of the expiration of the licensee's unrestricted active license; and
2. Pay the inactive licensure fee and any additional charges set by the Board.

Complete an application supplied by the Board, pay the $218 application fee, and complete any other requirements established by the Board.

A physician with an inactive license may renew it every 2 years. To renew it, a licensee with inactive status should complete a renewal application, pay the $218 renewal fee, and any additional charges set by the Board. If the licensee fails to renew their inactive license, the license will expire, and the licensee will not be eligible for inactive status.

Yes, a physician with a license in an inactive status can reinstate their license to active. The requirements for reinstating a license include, but are not limited to:

1. Completing the Board's online reinstatement application;
2. Paying the $700 reinstatement fee;
3. Earning 50 CMEs that are Category 1 or 2, with no more than 25 in Category 2, within the two years preceding the application submission. (At least 25 have to be Category 1);
4. Provide the Board with a detailed description of activities pursued during the last renewal application or, in the case of a physician who has never renewed, since the date when a medical licensure application was submitted to the Board; and
5. Completing a criminal history records check. The Board recommends that applicants submit fingerprints no earlier than six weeks before completing their application for reinstatement.
